About IWPR

What We Do

IWPR gives voice to people at the frontlines of conflict, crisis and change. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, IWPR helps people in the world's most challenging environments have the information they need to drive positive changes in their lives — holding government to account, demanding constructive solutions, strengthening civil society and securing human rights. Amid war, dictatorship, and political transition, IWPR builds the level of public information and responsible debate. IWPR forges the skills and capacity of local journalism, strengthens local media institutions and engages with civil society and governments to ensure that information achieves impact.

Identify Issues

To maximize its impact, IWPR connects local media with civil society — such as community groups, local and international NGOs, the UN, and government officials — to identify the issues adversely affecting a population. The issues are specific to a region and to the challenges it currently faces. One size doesn’t fit all. Never easy, the issues span a wide spectrum. Some of the issues we’ve tackled in recent years include human rights abuses, child trafficking, extra-judicial killings, health crises, women's rights, the human price of conflict, elections in emerging democracies.

Build Journalism

Journalism in areas of crisis is itself invariably in crisis, suffering repression, lack of financing and independence, and an absence of professional skills and ethics. IWPR's core mission is rooting professional journalism skills deeply within individuals and within societies. From the Balkans to Iraq and beyond, IWPR has played a leading role in establishing a leadership cadre across local media and across regions. Capacity-building initiatives strengthen media institutionally, from management training to establishing local radios and news agencies. IWPR is especially known for intensive, one-on-one, apprentice-style training from basic journalism to human rights and elections reporting.

Report News

IWPR reports combine our journalists' unique local information and understanding with international standards of in-depth and unbiased reporting. In print, radio and TV formats, reports are widely disseminated in the countries concerned, giving local populations, media, NGOs and officials unique access to reliable reporting on vital issues. Regional syndication builds bridges across conflict lines and helps strengthen understanding and cooperation Global dissemination informs international debate, empowering local journalists to impact policy while inspiring them to do their best work. IWPR stories are widely read via our award-winning website, through partner websites and media syndication, enabling international agencies and governments, media and humanitarian organizations to depend on IWPR's frontline reporting.

Raise Awareness

IWPR reporting raises public awareness, promotes debate, and supports action over critical challenges facing a nation or region. IWPR's outreach links our work on specific stories and themes to national and international efforts, agencies, and forums. In partnership with local and international NGOs, IWPR organizes events locally and regionally to drive change — exploring issues in-depth, examining strategies and policies, and pressing for transparency and accountability. Internationally, IWPR hosts discussion events to impact understanding and policy debate.

Make an Impact

IWPR journalism makes a difference. By following an “arc of impact” — from identifying issues and building local journalism, to reporting news and raising awareness — IWPR makes a difference.

The process is followed throughout our programs, strengthening local media, linking with civil society, and then engaging with government to improve people’s lives. Solid reporting holds government to account. It sheds a light on problems and airs possible solutions. It empowers people, individually and through civil society, to advocate for new polices. It drives change.
